 Jim obtained a Bachelor of Arts in physical sciences and Bachelor of Law from the University of Saskatchewan. His dispute resolution training was with Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society (AAMS). He completed a Certificate in Conflict Management in 1998 in mediation and negotiation. He was awarded Chartered Mediator and Chartered Arbitrator designations by ADR Institute of Canada Inc.
Jim retired in 2006 from a general law practice that included small business, oil & gas, real estate, family, and wills & estates. Prior to 12 years in general law practice, he was counsel to firms in the oil & gas industry. His dispute resolution practice since 1994 includes arbitration, mediation and instruction in conflict resolution. Disputes handled include motor vehicle warranties, divorce, oil and gas, community, estates, taxation, municipal, real estate and employment. He provides ADR training in communication, negotiation and mediation. He has acted as ombudsperson for AAMS since 1996. Jim was a member of the Alberta Municipal Government Board for over six years where he chaired over 100 hearings. He has been part of teams setting up dispute resolution programs in four different environments. He has a strong interest in getting people to the table, creative forms of dispute resolution and working with large groups.
